Choosing a therapist who is a good fit

I've learned over time that not all health providers are the best fit for me. In fact, it took me years to realize that I needed to switch primary care providers to someone who listened well and responded accordingly to what I was needing. Even though it sounds funny to say it this way, I am the consumer and I have choices as to who I trust with my health.

The same is true in the process of finding a therapist. You are the consumer. Your needs and goals matter. Sometimes you need someone to help you figure out what your needs and goals are. You have choices.

Though it can take some time and thoughtfulness, it is worth looking for what you need even it if takes effort. Ask questions. Explore your options. Ask for recommendations from health care providers and trusted family and friends. Trust that you will know that you are getting what you need, and if you are not, be brave in seeking out alternatives.

It may sound obvious, but therapy is about safety, relationship, and a working compatibility. It is not about perfection, but it is about fit. Your therapist is a unique human being and so are you. Find the match for what you need in this season of your life and growth.
